Ethiopia Facts

  • 5 million orphans living in Ethiopia
  • Average family income is only $280
  • Adolescents (10-19 yrs old) make up 24% of the population
  • 7 years of education is required in Ethiopia but only 52% complete 5th grade
  • The average student to teacher ration is 59 to 1
  • For boys between the age of 15 and 24 the literacy rate is only 62%
  • For girls of the same age the literacy rate is only 39%
  • Ethiopia’s annual health budget is $140 million dollars. To care for the orphans alone would require $115 million per month
  • For every 1,000 children born alive 123 die before the age of 5
  • Less than 1/3 of the population has access to clean drinking water
  • Even fewer have access to any kind of health service
  • Over 80% of deaths in Ethiopia are caused by preventable disease
  • Approximately ½ of children under age 5 suffer from stunting as a result of malnutrition
